Presbyopia |

The eye gradually loses its ability to automatically focus at different distances. The lens loses its flexibility. Foremost, the hardening of the lens is responsible, but also the ring-formed muscle (ciliary) that is responsible for changing the lens' curvature, gradually becomes weaker with age .Presbyopia begins at the age of 40-45. Initially, one notices an increased reading distance needed. The lens' loss of flexibility is gradual and reaches its peak at the age of 60. Those who suffer from presbyopia need reading glasses for tasks close-up. Those who are minimally short-sighted have the advantage, that the far point of sight is close-up anyway, so that presbyopia doesn't influence their vision for a long time. If one's short-sightedness is corrected via a laser procedure, he/she can initially focus on distant objects quite well. However, With increasing age, presbyopia, in this case, requires the use of reading glasses too. |
